And thought I’d give one of these a shot with dinner. Tastes like alcoholic spice cake, so not bad. What else is good in the wide, wide world of beer?

Samuel Adams Winter Porter/Boston Lager. Both solid choices. I’m also a fan of porters in general. Stouts are too dark for me but everyone is different.

If you want to prank/kill your friends, put non-alcoholic root beer labels on these. They won’t know until too late.

I prefer Bud Light to this. I hate Bud Light. It tastes like pure vanilla extract, and that’s not a compliment. It might be okay in a float, but that’s a maybe. There is way better stuff out there.

Shiner Bock, any Indian Pale Ale... Really, you need to go to a local pub with a lot of beers on tap to find out what YOU like.

I myself just recently turned 21 I like Great Lakes Burning River and I am a fan of Kentuky Bourbon Barrel Ale. Sam Adams Winter Lager ain't bad either. But my personal favorite is a good sipping Bourbon or Scotch. Try Glenleivet 12

The drinking age is all wrong in the States but your alcohol pricing is much more in line with a free country, unlike our god damn piece of shit system in Ontario.

I’d recommend going to a place with a lot of beer selection and picking out cans here and there. You’ll inevitably run into ones you’ll drink simply because you don’t want to waste it by pouring it out, but a good part of the fun is finding new beers and sampling them.

If there are beer festivals in your area, that’s always an excellent place to start. I went to one for the Michigan Brewers Guild (or something like that) in Detroit and the variety was excellent, and the fact that so much of it was delicious was very surprising.

One of my favourite American beers (I think it’s a craft beer, not sure) is called Two Hearted Ale from Bell’s. Try it if you find it.

I wasn’t a fan of that Root Beer, but their Ginger Ale is wonderful.

My favorite brewery across the board is Great Lakes. Edmund Fitzgerald and Eliot Ness being my favorite beers from them.

Guiness Extra Stout is a classic and their new Blonde is good, too.

New Belgium makes a lot of good beer. Fat Tire and 1554 are among my favorites.

It’s brewed in Tennessee so you know it’s tasty. Good flavorful beer but goes down easy. It will be a great introduction.

Check out your local craft breweries, those are always fun fun fun.

If you like strong, hoppy beers, Bell’s and Founder’s are two brewers to look at. They can be love-it-or-hate it, especially Founders.

But they both have a lot of different types of brews from IPAs, to Sessions, to Porters, to Nitro Stouts.

I’d recommend Bell’s Two Hearted and Founder’s All-Day IPA — those are my go-to’s for those brewers. If you like dark beers, their Porters are good.

If you want a lighter beer, one of my favorite types is Belgian White beers or witbiers. Those are the beers with crisp, light, orange peel or coriander taste notes. Hoegaarden is a great place to start there.

I recommend trying your local craft breweries first and find a store specializing in selling craft beer. The folks at both are gonna be your best guides for finding the tasty ones and trying different styles.

I, too, enjoy a good sipping Scotch. If you like Glenlivet, try Glenmorangie 10 year or the Nector D’Or and Bowmore Legend - both are in the sub-$50 range.

Local to the New Belgium brewery? If so - go take the tour and do the tasting - then you get a sample of everything they got and you can find out what you like and what you don’t. Most smaller craft breweries will do beer “flights” - basically a rack of samples of whatever you like. It’s a great way to taste everything a brewery has, (and not pay for a full pint of something you don’t like.)

all beer has a time and place. (sometimes poured down the drain)

Try them all!!! slowly of course.

Didn’t drink till 21 because I thought all beer tasted like bud light and natty ice. Then I found Guinness and sierra Nevada and wide variety of delicious stouts and IPAs.

Also fresh beer is >>>>> than older beer. The max shelf life of most places is @3-4 months, opposite of wine.

Well shit. Ok, so there are 4 basic components in every beer. You’ve got water, yeast, hops, and malt. Water is water. Yeast eats sugar and poops it out to make alcohol, and there are different kinds of yeast that poop different poop to make different flavors. For example, most Belgian beers have similar notes to them because they all use a certain type of yeast. Malt is the grain, and it gives the beer its (duh) maltiness. Cheap beer like Bud and Miller use old Corn Flakes or whatever they can get their hands on for cheap, which is why a can of Natty Ice will smell kind of like a bowl of Wheaties. Good beers choose 2 basic characteristics with regards to malt, the type and the roast. Barley is the most traditional and the most common, but wheat beer is getting more and more common, and people are starting to experiment more with different grains. Your darker beers are dark because the malt is heavily roasted, and the beer picks up the color of the roasty goodness. There are techniques for roasting grain that will give you any color from deep reds and ambers to pitch black, and flavors as exotic as chocolate and coffee. Hops are basically an add-on. There are so many different types of hops, and you can blend different types, so the possibilities are pretty endless. There are also different ways of adding the hops. Adding them to the boiling wort (what the beer is called before it’s fermented) will make the beer more bitter, while dry-hopping will mostly just add aroma. So messing with the hops is the easiest way to change the character of a beer. You can take identical batches of, say, a blonde ale, and by doing nothing but adding different hops, you can make it taste like pine needles, lemongrass, grapefruit, or any number of other flavors. Contrary to popular belief, certain types of beer aren’t inherently more hoppy than others. Just based on common practice, IPAs will generally be super hoppy (this is San Diego’s fault), but you can make an IPA style beer with practically no bitterness to it. Similarly, you can make, say, a porter hoppy enough to kick you right in the teeth. And brewers are starting to get outside the box a little more with the application of hops, which is a good thing.

Ok. So now the beer needs to be fermented. To do that, it’s placed in an airtight container with some sort of pressure-relieving valve, and let to sit for a bit while the yeast eats sugar and poops out alcohol. There are 2 basic types of beer. Ales are fermented at different temperatures. Some brewers do weird stuff like farmhouse ales and saisons as high as 90 degrees. Ales don’t care. Allowing the beer to ferment at different temperatures will give different characteristics to the beer, but it will always turn out an ale. Lagers are cold-fermented, usually in the low 50s. The cold fermentation generally mellows the beer way out. But breweries are starting to experiment with secondary fermentation and adding hops throughout the fermentation process to make more flavorful lagers.

Then there’s boring stuff, like adding sugar or gas to make carbonation and stuff like that. But nobody cares about that.

So that’s the nuts and bolts. Basically the key to enjoying beer is to remember that there is endless variety. If you tried a Saison and hated it, don’t get gun-shy on Saisons. The next one you try will be way different, and you might like it. There are thousands of breweries in the US, and they’re all trying weird and different shit. Also, remember that hops are kind of an acquired taste. Starting out, you’ll probably prefer Hefeweizens and Stouts and Blondes and other maltier beers. Work your way up to the San Diego IPAs and Dogheads. Also, don’t be a snob. It’s cool to know your shit and enjoy good beer, but don’t be the dude who orders water when the bar only has Coors Light, or the dude who spouts off unsolicited information every time the waiter brings a pint. Everyone hates that guy. Try everything you can, and just have fun with it. I’ll recommend you some breweries if you want, but most of the fun is in getting out there and exploring.
